Chapter 6 - THE CLEANER STORY

The emergency custody hearing began at nine the next morning.

Ethan wore navy instead of black. He looked exhausted, humble, and devastated—the costume of a father forced to protect his daughter from the woman he loved.

Laura’s reddened cheek had faded to yellow beneath makeup. Miriam advised her not to conceal it entirely.

Ethan’s attorney displayed the crib video without its creation data. Dr. Mercer appeared remotely and testified that Laura had repeatedly misunderstood dosage instructions.

“That is false,” Laura said.

The judge warned her not to interrupt.

Miriam produced Dr. Shah’s test showing the sedative was absent from the medicine bottle Christine brought. She introduced the predated video metadata and requested access to the complete home-security system.

Ethan’s attorney claimed the timestamp changed during cloud transfer.

Then Vera testified.

She described Laura as sleep-deprived, paranoid, and physically aggressive. When Miriam asked whether she was sleeping with Ethan, Vera looked sorrowfully toward the judge.

“Our relationship began after Ethan said the marriage was over.”

“Were you in his marital home yesterday?”

“Christine invited me because she feared Laura might harm Emma.”

“Did you strike Laura?”

“I defended myself when she tried to pull Emma from me.”

Laura felt rage rise, then forced it down. Vera’s strength was not credibility; it was composure. Losing control would complete her portrait.

The judge ordered shared temporary custody under supervision. Emma would remain at St. Anne’s until medically cleared, then spend nights with Ethan at Christine’s home. Laura would receive four supervised hours daily.

It was not total defeat, but Ethan smiled as though it were.

Outside the courtroom, he cornered Laura near the elevators.

“Sign the proxy and I’ll agree to fifty-fifty custody.”

“You just proved this was about the trust.”

“No one recorded me.”

He no longer cared enough to pretend when he believed no witness was near.

“Where is Emma’s blanket recorder?”

His eyes shifted. “What recorder?”

Miriam approached, and Ethan stepped away.

At the hospital, Laura found Emma brighter but still weak. She sang while the toddler slept against her chest. At the end of the visit, Emma cried so violently that the supervisor had to peel her fingers from Laura’s dress.

Ethan watched without emotion.

That evening, Dr. Shah called. She had analyzed a preserved blood sample more closely. The sedative was not a common prescription. It was an investigational compound identified only by a laboratory code.

E17-B.

Ellison Diagnostics had registered that code for a pediatric sleep study eighteen months earlier.

The trial had never been publicly announced.

Miriam searched regulatory databases. No approved human study existed.

When they called Dr. Mercer, his clinic receptionist said he had taken an indefinite leave and left the country that morning.

His office records had been removed during the night.
