Chapter 14 - THE WOMAN WHO SLAPPED HER
Vera was arrested before dawn.
She screamed Ethan’s name as officers led her through the clinic. He watched from the corridor without approaching.
Laura recognized the expression on Vera’s face. It was the same disbelief Laura had felt when Ethan crossed the living room to embrace another woman.
Vera had mistaken being chosen for being safe.
Emma returned to intensive care, but doctors expected recovery. Miriam obtained an emergency order restoring Laura’s medical authority. For the first time in days, no supervisor stood between mother and child.
Laura held Emma until the toddler’s breathing eased.
“No red,” Emma whispered.
“Never again.”
Vera requested to speak with Laura from custody.
“You think I deserve this,” Vera said through the glass.
“I think Emma deserved none of it.”
Vera admitted she accessed David’s files the night he died. She and Ethan found the E17 disclosure after Christine called them into the study. David was already unconscious.
“Christine had poured his drink,” Vera said. “Ethan told me to print the report and delete the server copy. He promised David’s death was natural.”
“You believed him?”
“I wanted to.”
Vera had hidden the printed disclosure rather than destroy it. It was stored in a safe under her original surname, Fontaine-Lowe. She offered it in exchange for Laura asking prosecutors to consider cooperation.
“Why should I help you?”
“Because the report proves Ethan continued E17. And because page forty-two contains something about your father you will not want public.”
Laura retrieved the report with federal investigators present.
Page forty-two documented the first unauthorized human exposure to E17-B. Six years earlier, a hospital had accidentally administered a precursor compound to a seven-year-old boy during an Ellison-funded study. The child survived with permanent lung damage.
David learned of it and paid the family through a confidential settlement. He halted E17 but did not report the exposure to regulators.
Ethan’s crime grew in the shelter David’s silence created.
Vera expected Laura to hide the page to protect her father and the company. Ethan expected the same. Both assumed family loyalty meant concealment.
Laura gave the complete report to regulators.
The next day, the injured boy’s mother called her.
“Your father bought our silence,” the woman said. “What do you want now?”
“To give you back your voice.”

It became a promise that no parent would again be cornered into protecting an institution that had harmed a child.
