Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT LAURA BROKE THE ORDER
Laura reached Christine’s mansion in twelve minutes.
Miriam called police while Rosa drove. The temporary order prohibited Laura from entering outside supervised hours. Laura knew violating it could cost her custody permanently.
She went in anyway.
The front door was unlocked. Ethan waited in the living room with his phone raised.
“You are trespassing,” he announced for the recording.
Laura ignored him. “Where is Emma?”
Vera emerged from the hallway. “Look how unstable she is.”
The scene was staged. They had shown Laura the bottle to lure her into breaking the order.
Then she heard Emma cough upstairs.
Laura ran. Ethan caught her at the staircase, but Rosa struck his arm away. Police entered moments later to find Laura struggling, Ethan shouting, and Vera filming.
Christine stood at the top of the stairs holding Emma.
The child was conscious. Her drowsiness came from exhaustion, not another dose. The red bottle on the table contained colored water.
Ethan had designed a perfect picture of Laura violating a court order over an imaginary emergency.
“Arrest her,” he said.
One officer moved toward Laura. The other climbed the stairs and examined Emma. Then Emma pointed at Christine’s pocket.
“Red drops.”
Christine stepped back.
The officer found no bottle, only a small brass key.
Laura was cited for trespass but not jailed. The family judge suspended her in-person visits pending review.
Ethan had won the round.
Outside the courthouse the next day, reporters waited. Someone had leaked the mansion video edited to show Laura forcing entry and screaming. Headlines called her the “Diagnostics Heiress in Custody Meltdown.”
Laura watched the footage once.
“They removed Emma coughing,” she said.
Miriam nodded. “And they removed the officer searching Christine.”
“Can we obtain the full body-camera recording?”
“We’ve requested it. Ethan’s attorneys are seeking a protective seal.”
Laura returned to Rosa’s apartment and found an overnight envelope with no return address.
Inside was the missing audio device from Emma’s blanket.
Its casing had been crushed. The memory card was gone.
On the back, someone had scratched three numbers: 4-1-7.
Rosa recognized them as the combination to David’s old office archive.
When they opened cabinet 417 the following morning, they found not the missing recording, but a second death certificate for David Ellison.
