Chapter 11 - THE HAIRCUT

Richard cut Evelyn’s hair hours later.

Not to create a perfect new identity.

That would have been absurd.

He wanted to humiliate her.

Disorient her.

Make any quick security-camera image less immediately recognizable to staff who knew her from professional visits.

Mostly, he wanted control.

Evelyn understood that when he said:

“No one will recognize you now.”

It was not a sophisticated plan.

It was cruelty pretending to be strategy.

Paula watched.

Did not intervene.

Then Richard told her they were moving Evelyn through the old service corridor.

“Where?”

“She’s leaving.”

“With restraints?”

“She’s dangerous.”

Evelyn screamed:

“I am not dangerous!”

Paula looked at Richard.

He said:

“You want your job after this?”

That was the moment Paula crossed the line she would later spend years explaining.

She pushed the chair.

The old cremation chamber was decommissioned and physically incapable of lawful use without extensive restoration.

Investigators confirmed:

power disconnected,

fuel system inactive,

controls partially removed.

That fact did not make the corridor harmless.

A restrained person being pushed toward an enclosed industrial chamber while a man screamed:

Push her in

did not require working flames to create terror or criminal exposure.

Evelyn later insisted journalists include that distinction.

“No fire touched me.”

Some reporters thought that weakened the headline.

Evelyn thought accuracy strengthened the truth.
