Chapter 12 - KELLER AT THE DOOR

Keller received Evelyn’s missed-check-in release at 6:20 p.m.

Her attorney called him.

“She may be at Ashcroft.”

Keller drove there.

Reception said:

“No Evelyn Mercer is admitted.”

He asked security.

Nothing.

Then a nurse he trusted quietly said:

“I saw Mrs. Mercer upstairs.”

Keller went to the unit.

Her room was empty.

He found Paula’s name on the assignment board.

Then learned one service elevator had been activated with Richard’s executive access code.

Keller followed.

The old corridor door was locked.

He heard a scream.

“Somebody help me!”

Then Richard’s voice.

Keller started pounding.

“EVELYN!”

Security arrived.

The door opened.

The chair sat inches from the chamber entrance.

No fire.

No active machinery.

No mystery about what Richard intended next was required for Keller to act.
