Chapter 3 - EVELYN BEFORE ASHCROFT

Evelyn was not a psychiatrist.

Not a regulator.

Not an investigator.

She was a healthcare finance attorney.

For twelve years she represented:

hospital systems,

clinics,

insurers,

and healthcare investment funds.

That was how she met Richard.

He invested.

She reviewed deals.

They married after three years together.

For most of the marriage, their careers rarely collided directly.

Then Richard invested in Ashcroft.

He told Evelyn:

“It’s a turnaround.”

She asked:

“Clinical or financial?”

“Both.”

She laughed.

“Those are different things.”

At first she knew only broad numbers.

Occupancy.

Debt.

Payroll.

Payer mix.

Then one evening Richard left a board packet open on the dining table.

Evelyn saw a graph.

Average length of stay.

It had climbed dramatically.

Revenue had too.

She said:

“Impressive.”

Richard answered:

“Finally.”

Then she noticed something else.

Involuntary holds had climbed even faster.

Evelyn stopped smiling.
