Linda did not want the sanctuary for herself.
She wanted Ryan to have stature.
For years she believed Claire outshone him.
Better salary.
More confidence.
More social connections.
Then Helen chose Claire as steward of a multi-million-dollar charitable property.
Linda called it:
“another thing handed to Claire.”
She told Ryan:
“You’re her husband. Why are you always the assistant in your own life?”
Ryan denied those words mattered.
They did.
Linda believed Ryan would be better as steward because he was “less sentimental.”
That was her favorite word for Claire.
