Chapter 13 - WHAT JAVIER DID NEXT
Javier moved into a small apartment.
Not ruined.
Not disowned.
Carmen tried to move in with him during the criminal case.
He said no.
That was his first meaningful boundary with her.
Too late for Sofia.
Still real.
Then he resigned from the family company.
Not because Adrian forced him.
Because he finally understood how much of his identity depended on Carmen’s approval.
He took a job managing events for an independent venue.
Less prestige.
Less family protection.
Sofia heard through mutual friends.
She did not contact him.
Then Javier wrote one letter.
No plea for reunion.
He said:
I thought being neutral was kinder than choosing.
Then:
I understand now that when one person is being harmed, neutrality is a choice.
Sofia kept that line.
Not the letter.
She shredded the rest.
Then Adrian admitted he had received a call from Javier weeks earlier.
Javier asked whether Adrian would ever forgive him.
“What did you say?” Sofia asked.
“That he asked the wrong person.”
Good.
Forgiveness was not a chairman’s decision.
Then one year after the wedding, Javier sent Sofia a final message through counsel:
I will not contact you again unless you initiate.
Sofia appreciated that more than every apology before it.
Respecting a boundary without being rewarded.
