Chapter 6 - WHAT SOFIA HAD ASKED FOR

Sofia never wanted Adrian to walk her down the aisle.

People assumed that meant distance.

It meant the opposite.

She asked him privately months before:

“If you walk me down, the wedding becomes about you.”

Adrian smiled.

“You think very highly of me.”

“You know what I mean.”

He did.

Business reporters watched Adrian.

Luxury-industry guests watched him.

The Robles family knew his name.

Sofia wanted one day where she was not:

Chairman Reyes’s daughter.

She wanted:

Sofia.

Bride.

Occupational therapist.

Friend.

Woman.

Adrian agreed.

He was supposed to arrive late at the reception after a board meeting.

Sit at a side table.

No speech.

No announcement.

Then go home.

Javier knew all of this.

He promised to protect her privacy.

Instead he weaponized it both ways.

To Sofia:

“I respect that you don’t want my family knowing.”

To Carmen:

“She doesn’t have anyone important coming.”

Then, when Adrian confirmed attendance, Javier told Carmen:

“The chairman may stop by.”

Carmen suddenly upgraded:

table linens,

wine,

security,

flower arrangements.

She thought Adrian was there for business.

Javier allowed that assumption.

Why?

He later admitted:

“I wanted Mom to see I could bring important people into the room.”

Sofia stared during mediation.

“So even my father’s presence became your achievement.”

Javier whispered:

“Yes.”

Then:

“I didn’t think she’d hurt you.”

Sofia answered:

“You knew she humiliated me.”

“Yes.”

“You knew she judged people by power.”

“Yes.”

“And you kept the truth because you wanted to see whether I could survive her without it.”

“No.”

He stopped.

Then corrected himself.

“I wanted to avoid choosing.”

That was closer.

Javier wanted Sofia privately.

Carmen’s approval publicly.

Adrian’s network professionally.

And no conflict among them.

A life assembled from everyone else absorbing discomfort.
