Chapter 7 - THE REYES NAME

The next morning, Carmen’s version spread first.

She told relatives:

Sofia deceived us.

She let us think she was ordinary.

She hid a powerful family connection.

That narrative almost worked.

Until Sofia answered one question in a family group message:

“What did I ever ask you for because of Adrian?”

Silence.

No job.

No money.

No investment.

No wedding discount.

No business introduction.

Nothing.

Then she wrote:

“You were cruel to me when you believed I could do nothing for you. That is what you are angry people now know.”

Carmen left the chat.

The message was forwarded everywhere anyway.

Sofia hated that.

She did not want to become viral family gossip.

Then Adrian’s communications team asked whether he wanted a statement.

He said no.

Sofia’s identity was not corporate news.

When a business journalist asked Reyes Group about the wedding incident, the company answered only:

“Chairman Reyes attended a private family event. We do not comment on private family matters.”

No triumphant press release.

No destroying the Robles name.

Then something more interesting happened.

Carmen had been pursuing a vendor partnership with one of Reyes Group’s hotel affiliates.

Adrian immediately recused himself from any decision.

He did not cancel the proposal himself.

He sent the matter to independent procurement.

Why?

“If I touch it now, they’ll say I used corporate power for revenge.”

Sofia looked at him.

“Did you want to?”

“Yes.”

She almost smiled.

Adrian continued:

“That’s why I shouldn’t.”

The review later found the Robles proposal competitive but incomplete on insurance documentation and staffing guarantees.

They were allowed to cure deficiencies.

No blacklisting.

No revenge contract cancellation.

Sofia appreciated that more than vengeance.

Power became restraint.

Then Adrian admitted his own mistake again.

“I should have told you about Javier’s office visit.”

“Yes.”

“I thought protecting you meant deciding what information would hurt you.”

Sofia looked at him.

“That sounds familiar.”

He nodded.

For all his differences from Javier, Adrian had committed a softer version of the same mistake.

Withholding truth “for her.”

Sofia said:

“Don’t do it again.”

May you like

“I won’t.”

That was accountability too.
