Chapter 3 - THE PRIVATE VISIT

Javier first visited Adrian eight months before the engagement.

Sofia had no idea.

He requested a private meeting through Reyes Group’s executive assistant.

Reason:

personal family matter.

Adrian assumed emergency.

Instead Javier arrived in a dark suit carrying a business presentation.

His family owned Robles Events and Hospitality, a regional company that managed luxury weddings, corporate events, and two boutique hotels.

They wanted access to a larger network.

Javier asked Adrian for introductions.

Not money.

Not a secret investment.

Introductions to:

hotel owners,

corporate travel directors,

event-management partners.

Adrian stared at him.

“Does Sofia know you’re here?”

Javier said:

“No.”

“Then the meeting is over.”

Javier panicked.

“I love her.”

“Then don’t turn her into a business card.”

Javier apologized.

He said Carmen pressured him constantly.

Said his mother would treat Sofia differently if she knew.

That part was probably true.

Then Javier asked Adrian not to tell Sofia.

“She’ll think I’m using her.”

Adrian answered:

“You are.”

Javier looked ashamed.

He promised it would never happen again.

Adrian made a mistake.

He believed him.

He kept the meeting private.

Not because Javier deserved protection.

Because Adrian did not want Sofia embarrassed.

Now, in the ballroom, Adrian admitted that.

“I should have told you.”

Sofia looked at him.

“You knew he was trying to use you?”

“Once.”

“And you didn’t tell me?”

“No.”

Another small betrayal.

Different scale.

Still real.

Then Javier spoke.

“I never asked him again.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Not directly.”

Sofia turned.

“What does that mean?”

Adrian’s assistant had received three later emails from Javier.

No meeting requests.

Just:

Could Chairman Reyes recommend a hotel operator?

Could his office make a warm introduction?

Would he attend the Robles showcase?

Each time Adrian declined.

Each time Javier told Sofia nothing.

Then the final email, two weeks before the wedding:

My mother believes your attendance could transform how she sees Sofia.

Adrian had interpreted it as:

Carmen might finally respect Sofia.

Now he understood the uglier possibility.

Javier had hoped Adrian’s arrival would increase Sofia’s value in Carmen’s eyes.

Not because Sofia deserved dignity.

Because a chairman’s approval would make Carmen reconsider the woman she called poor.

Then Sofia asked:

“Was that why you begged Adrian to come?”

May you like

Javier could not answer.

That was answer enough.
