Chapter 4 - CARMEN'S TEST
Carmen had never liked Sofia.
Not because Sofia was rude.
Not because she hurt Javier.
Because Carmen could not place her.
Sofia worked as a pediatric occupational therapist.
Good income.
Ordinary by Carmen’s standards.
She rented a modest apartment before marriage.
Drove a six-year-old car.
Bought secondhand furniture.
When Carmen asked about family money, Sofia answered:
“I support myself.”
Carmen heard:
There is none.
Then Carmen began testing her.
At the engagement dinner:
“Do you know which fork is yours?”
At the bridal fitting:
“Don’t pick anything too expensive. Javier has a future.”
At family brunch:
“Some women marry upward and forget to be grateful.”
Sofia told Javier.
He always answered:
“She’ll settle down.”
Then Carmen pushed a prenuptial agreement.
Sofia surprised everyone.
She signed after independent counsel reviewed it.
No fight.
No demand for Javier’s future family company.
Carmen looked disappointed.
The agreement removed one of her favorite accusations.
So she found another.
Class.
She told relatives Sofia was “from nowhere.”
That Adrian was “some older mentor who paid for school.”
Not entirely false.
Distorted.
Then, three weeks before the wedding, Carmen created what she called a family welcome speech.
Javier saw the draft.
It included:
We are pleased to give Sofia the stability she has never had.
And:
She is fortunate to join a family with standards.
Javier told Carmen to soften it.
He did not tell Sofia.
Why?
Because he wanted the wedding calm.
The same cowardice wearing manners.
Then, at the reception, Sofia refused Carmen’s final demand.
Carmen wanted Sofia to stand before Adrian Reyes when he arrived and publicly thank the Robles family for “giving her a future.”
Sofia said:
“No.”
Carmen grabbed her arm.
Sofia pulled away.
Carmen called her ungrateful.
Sofia said:
“I will not humiliate myself so you can impress a guest.”
That was when Carmen slapped her.
Then again during the struggle backstage before guests fully turned.
The marks on Sofia’s arms came from Carmen’s grip.
The torn dress came from Sofia trying to pull free.
Javier had witnessed almost all of it.
And kept saying:
“Mom, calm down.”
Never:
May you like
“Stop touching my wife.”
That difference ended the marriage before Sofia admitted it.
