Chapter 1 - THE KITCHEN FLOOR

Clara Ward was already on the kitchen floor when the front door opened.

She had both arms wrapped around Lily.

Her six-year-old daughter was crying into her chest, one fist twisted around a rag doll with one button eye.

Evelyn Ward stood over them holding a wooden stick.

“You useless parasite! All you do is leech off this family!”

The stick came down against Clara’s guarded upper back.

Then her arm.

Clara twisted harder around Lily.

“Don’t touch my daughter!”

The front door slammed against the wall.

Michael appeared in the kitchen, still wearing his navy business coat.

He stopped.

One second.

Maybe less.

Then dropped his work bag and ran.

“Get away from them!”

He caught Evelyn’s wrist.

Tore the stick away.

Threw it across the kitchen.

Evelyn spun toward him.

“She was causing drama!”

Michael slapped her.

Sharp.

One strike.

Evelyn staggered back, more shocked than hurt.

Michael immediately turned away from her.

He knelt beside Clara.

“Clara… I’ve got you.”

Clara was trembling.

Lily would not release her blouse.

Michael helped them stand.

Then faced his mother.

“Apologize to my wife and daughter. Right now.”

Evelyn touched her cheek.

Her eyes hardened.

“No.”

Michael stared.

“No?”

“I will not apologize for saying what everyone knows.”

Clara went still.

Michael said:

“What exactly does everyone know?”

Evelyn looked straight at Clara.

“That she lives off you.”

Michael laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because the statement made no sense.

Then Evelyn walked to the kitchen counter.

Picked up a thick gray binder.

Dropped it onto the table.

Across the spine, in black marker:

WARD FAMILY CONTRIBUTIONS.

Evelyn opened it.

Bank deposits.

Mortgage payments.

Utilities.

School tuition.

Insurance.

Groceries.

Columns beside every name.

MICHAEL.

EVELYN.

CLARA.

Under Clara’s column, month after month, the cash contribution line read:

$0.

Evelyn tapped the page.

“There.”

Clara looked at the binder.

Then at Michael.

Michael looked back at his mother.

“Where are the company hours?”

May you like

Evelyn’s face changed.

And suddenly Clara understood that Michael knew exactly where to look.
