Chapter 14 - EVELYN AND LILY

Lily did not see Evelyn for three months.

Then supervised visits began.

Not because Evelyn demanded them.

Because Lily eventually asked:

“Is Grandma gone forever?”

Clara said:

“No.”

“Can I see her?”

“Do you want to?”

“I think.”

That was enough to discuss with the child therapist.

First visit:

public library.

Thirty minutes.

Evelyn brought no gifts.

No food.

No lectures.

Lily carried Rosie.

Evelyn looked at the doll.

Then at Lily.

“I’m sorry I tried to take her.”

Lily hugged Rosie tighter.

“You said I was a baby.”

“I did.”

“I’m not.”

“I know.”

Lily thought.

Then:

“Babies are okay too.”

Evelyn almost smiled.

“Yes.”

Lily did not hug her.

Evelyn did not ask.

The visit ended.

Small.

Safe.

Enough.

Lily’s therapist also asked Clara not to repeatedly praise her for being brave during the kitchen incident.

“Why?”

“Because she hid behind you.”

Clara looked confused.

“That was brave too?”

The therapist smiled.

“She was six. She was scared. Hiding behind a safe adult was exactly what she should have done.”

Clara cried afterward.

She had been unconsciously turning survival into performance too.

Lily did not need to become fearless to prove the event had not damaged her.

Months later, when Evelyn first returned to the house under agreed conditions, she stood in the kitchen doorway and stopped.

The old stick was gone.

Michael had thrown it away after police released it.

Evelyn looked at the floor.

Clara noticed.

Neither mentioned it.

Not every object needed a ceremony.

The kitchen had already carried enough symbolism.

They made coffee instead.
