Chapter 13 - THE FAMILY CONTRIBUTION FILE

Evelyn gave Michael the binder.

He almost threw it away.

Clara stopped him.

“Keep it.”

“Why?”

“Because some of it is useful.”

Evelyn looked surprised.

Claire—Clara—opened the binder.

The early sections documented:

Thomas’s loans,

vehicle payments,

estate expenses,

family reimbursements.

Good records.

Later pages became judgment disguised as accounting.

Clara removed nothing.

She added a new section.

NON-CASH CONTRIBUTIONS.

Childcare.

Household management.

Unpaid business administration.

Caregiving.

Volunteer labor.

Not dollar amounts.

Descriptions.

Michael asked:

“Why no values?”

Clara answered:

“Because not everything needs to become a debt.”

Evelyn stared at the new pages.

The binder had once made Clara disappear.

Now it had to learn how to record what money could not summarize.
