Chapter 4 - CLARA LEFT HER JOB
Clara did not quit paid work because Michael ordered her to.
She chose.
That mattered.
After Lily turned two, Clara’s employer required more travel.
Three days a month.
Then five.
Ward Home Services still depended on her.
Michael was overwhelmed.
Childcare coverage kept collapsing.
Clara resigned.
She told herself:
This is temporary.
Evelyn praised her then.
“Family first.”
Clara remembered the exact words.
Two years later, the same decision became:
“You haven’t earned a paycheck in years.”
How?
Because unpaid labor is easiest to praise while it is useful.
Harder to remember when money becomes the measure.
Michael transferred household money into their joint account.
They never treated it as an allowance.
It was marital income.
Clara paid:
groceries,
school expenses,
household bills,
and personal costs
from the same account.
Evelyn saw only one thing.
Michael’s salary entered.
Clara’s did not.
