Chapter 8 - MICHAEL'S FAILURE

Michael wanted to make the story simple.
Mother attacked wife.
Mother wrong.
Husband protects family.
Done.
Clara would not let him.
“You let this happen too.”
He stared.
“The stick?”
“No.”
She looked at the laptop.
“The rest.”
Michael sat.
Clara continued:
“Every year you said we’d put me on payroll.”
“I know.”
“Every year something came up.”
“I know.”
“And every time your mother called it family help, you let her.”
“I didn’t know she was keeping that binder.”
“That’s not the point.”
He looked ashamed.
“What is?”
“You got to think I was contributing because you saw the work.”
She swallowed.
“She got to think I was contributing nothing because there was no paycheck.”
Michael closed his eyes.
Clara said:
“You were the only person who could see both versions.”
And he had never forced them to meet.
Michael’s slap remained something he disliked remembering.
His attorney believed the initial disarming was clearly protective.
The slap came after the stick was already out of Evelyn’s hand.
That mattered.
Michael told Clara:
“I wanted her to feel what I saw.”
Clara answered:
“I know.”
“That doesn’t make it okay.”
“No.”
He looked surprised she agreed so quickly.
Clara continued:
May you like
“I needed you to stop her. I didn’t need revenge.”
Michael carried that distinction into therapy too.
