Chapter 14 - EMMA'S FOURTH BIRTHDAY

One year later, Emma turned four.
Small party.
Rachel’s house.
Blue dress again.
Emma chose it.
New cake.
Pink.
Three candles would have been wrong now.
Four.
Rachel placed the cake on the table.
Emma looked at it.
Then asked:
“Grandma Diane isn’t coming?”
“No.”
“Because she broke my other cake?”
“Because she is still learning how to be safe around you.”
Emma thought about that.
Then nodded.
Mark attended.
Alone.
He brought a gift.
A child-sized gardening set.
Not because Emma had to become a farmer.
May you like
Because she liked digging in Rachel’s flower bed.
That distinction mattered.
