Chapter 2 - THE HOUSE GOES QUIET

Rachel left the dining room with Emma.

Not the house.

Not yet.

She went upstairs.

Locked the bedroom door.

Emma cried against her chest.

“Grandma broke my cake.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

Rachel did not know how to explain hatred disguised as tradition to a three-year-old.

So she said:

“You did nothing wrong.”

Emma touched Rachel’s cheek.

“Daddy hit you.”

Rachel closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

That was harder.

Downstairs, voices rose.

Diane:

“She attacked me!”

Mark:

“I know.”

Robert Mercer, Mark’s uncle:

“Everyone needs to calm down.”

Lauren, Mark’s cousin:

“This whole thing got insane.”

Rachel heard Mark say:

“She always does this. She turns everything into a crisis.”

Rachel stared at the closed door.

He had hit her.

And already he was describing her reaction as the problem.
