Chapter 1 - DID YOU REALLY FALL?

Vivian Bennett tilted the metal pot.

The hot liquid spilled across Elena’s upper back and shoulder.

Elena screamed.

Her knees collapsed.

She hit the hardwood floor and crawled forward on shaking hands.

“Don’t ever cook this garbage again,” Vivian said.

No apology.

No panic.

Just contempt.

Elena reached toward the doorway.

“Daniel…”

Her husband rushed into the kitchen.

He stopped.

Saw Elena on the floor.

Saw Vivian holding the pot.

Saw the spilled liquid.

“Elena?”

“HELP ME!”

Daniel stepped toward her.

Then stopped again.

He grabbed a towel.

Wiped the liquid near his shoes.

Elena stared.

“What are you doing?”

Daniel looked at Vivian.

Then said, calm and deliberate:

“Next time, please be careful not to fall like that.”

Vivian nodded once.

Elena’s face went empty.

He was not confused.

He was choosing.

The doorway opened again.

Dr. Michael Hayes entered.

Daniel had invited him to dinner because Michael was an old college friend and emergency physician.

Now Michael saw Elena on the floor and immediately dropped beside her.

“What happened?”

Daniel stepped between Michael and Vivian.

“She slipped.”

Vivian set the pot on the counter and forced concern into her face.

Michael looked at the floor.

The pot.

The liquid.

Elena’s shoulder.

Then Daniel.

His expression changed.

He knelt closer to Elena.

“Can I look at the area?”

Elena nodded.

Michael examined the reddened skin without touching more than necessary.

Then looked directly at her.

“Did you really fall?”

Daniel went pale.

Vivian’s jaw tightened.

Elena looked past Michael at both of them.

Daniel’s eyes pleaded.

Not:

Tell the truth.

Something worse.

Don’t destroy us.

Elena opened her mouth.

Before she answered, Michael noticed a faded bruise beneath her sleeve.

He stopped.

“How did you get that?”

Elena looked down.

She had almost forgotten it.

Vivian answered first.

“She walked into a cabinet.”

May you like

Michael looked at Elena again.

“Did she?”
