Chapter 5 - KEEP IT SIMPLE

The phrase appeared repeatedly in Daniel’s messages with Vivian.

Keep it simple.

After the wrist:

Vivian:

She’s dramatic.

Daniel:

I handled it. Keep it simple if anyone asks.

After the pantry door:

Vivian:

She’ll say I did it on purpose.

Daniel:

Then don’t argue. Door accident. Keep it simple.

After the cup fragment:

Vivian:

She’s trying to turn you against me.

Daniel:

I’ll talk to her. Keep it simple.

Elena read the thread.

The words were not:

Lie.

Cover this up.

Destroy evidence.

That almost made them worse.

Lying had become routine language.

A family habit.

Daniel said:

“I was trying to keep fights from becoming permanent.”

Elena answered:

“You made the truth temporary instead.”

Then Laura discovered a second pattern.

Whenever Elena had an injury involving Vivian, Daniel scheduled a dinner, a weekend away, a gift, something restorative.

After the wrist sprain:

hotel weekend.

After the pantry incident:

new necklace.

After the cup:

spa appointment.

Elena had interpreted those as apologies from Daniel for family stress.

Now they looked like resets.

Not deliberate bribery necessarily.

But emotional closure without accountability.

Daniel wanted each incident to end.

Vivian wanted each incident forgotten.

Elena wanted peace too.

That was why it worked.

Then Michael asked Elena:

“Did Vivian ever apologize?”

Elena thought.

Not really.

She said:

“You know how I get.”

“You provoke me.”

“I’m old-fashioned.”

“I shouldn’t have raised my voice.”

Never:

I hurt you.

Then one family text surfaced from six months earlier.

Vivian to Daniel:

If she ever starts documenting me, your marriage is over.

Daniel replied:

She won’t.

Elena stared.

Not:

She has no reason to.

She won’t.

“How could you know?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Because I knew you wanted us to stay together.”

That was the betrayal.

He had treated her love as insurance against disclosure.
