Chapter 8 - THE POT

The metal pot became evidence.
No fingerprints mystery.
No magic residue.
Just physical reconstruction.
Vivian claimed Elena backed into her while Vivian carried the pot.
The angle did not fit well.
Spill distribution was mostly on Elena’s upper back and shoulder.
Less on the floor behind Vivian.
More consistent with a directed pour or tilt from above and behind.
Again:
consistent.
Not mathematically certain.
Then the guests from dinner were interviewed.
There had been only three.
Michael arrived moments later.
One guest, Susan Mercer, had been in the adjacent dining space before stepping outside for a phone call.
She heard Vivian say:
“If you serve Daniel that garbage again, I’ll throw it out myself.”
Then Elena:
“Then don’t eat it.”
Then a scream.
Susan did not see the pour.
But the argument supported context.
Another guest, Robert Hale, saw Vivian holding the pot immediately afterward.
Daniel entered.
Then Robert heard Daniel say:
“Next time, please be careful not to fall like that.”
Robert admitted:
“I knew that wasn’t what happened.”
Laura looked at him.
“Why didn’t you say anything?”
Robert looked ashamed.
“Family business.”
Elena felt rage.
The phrase again.
Privacy used as insulation.
Then Robert added:
“Daniel looked at us like he wanted everyone to go along.”
Daniel denied intentionally signaling.
Maybe he had.
Maybe not.
But everyone understood the cue.
Then Susan provided one more detail.
After Elena fell, Vivian’s first words were not:
Are you okay?
They were:
“Look what you made me do.”
Vivian’s attorney objected to characterization.
But Susan was firm.
May you like
“That is what she said.”
The sentence captured everything.
