Chapter 7 - THE FAMILY DOCTOR
One name appeared in several old records.
Dr. Robert Sloan.
Family physician.
Retired now.
He had treated Vivian, Thomas, Daniel, and later occasionally Elena.
Laura interviewed him.
He remembered Vivian.
“Difficult patient.”
He remembered Elena too.
Once, after the wrist sprain, Dr. Sloan asked Daniel privately whether there was family conflict.
Why?
Elena seemed hesitant.
Daniel answered:
“My wife and mother argue. Elena falls when she gets worked up.”
Elena stared at the transcript.
He had not only covered the incident.
He created a character description.
Emotional.
Clumsy under stress.
Then Dr. Sloan said he made a note:
Consider interpersonal safety if injuries recur.
But the note was in his private clinical record.
Daniel never saw it.
When the practice migrated systems, that old note did not transfer cleanly.
A warning became stranded.
Then another clinician had seen the pantry injury.
Another the chemical burn.
Separate systems.
Separate events.
No one saw the full pattern.
Michael said:
“This is why continuity matters.”
Elena thought of Daniel’s notebook.
Ironically, he had the continuity doctors lacked.
He knew every incident.
And used that knowledge to prevent connection.
Then Laura found an insurance form Daniel completed after the wrist injury.
Question:
Was injury caused by another person?
Daniel checked:
NO.
Elena stared.
“That is a direct lie.”
Daniel looked down.
“Yes.”
The first time he said it plainly.
Then Laura asked:
“Why?”
Daniel answered:
“Because if I said yes, they’d ask who.”
“And?”
“I knew what would happen.”
“What?”
“My mother would become the problem.”
Elena whispered:
“She was the problem.”
Daniel finally looked at her.

“I know.”
But knowing now did not erase choosing then.
