Margaret refused.
Then foundation counsel reminded her:
Emily had inspection rights.
The birthday-style family party was booked as:
DONOR CULTIVATION WEEKEND.
Foundation charges:
catering — $18,600.
floral design — $11,200.
lake lighting — $7,800.
security — $5,400.
temporary dock repair — $14,900.
guest transportation — $9,100.
Total:
more than $67,000.
How many actual donors attended?
Eight.
How many family members and private friends?
Forty-three.
Margaret’s attorney, Lauren Pierce, defended it.
“Major donors were present.”
True.
“The foundation may conduct cultivation events.”
True.
“The lake residence was used as event space.”
True.
Then Emily found the dock repair.
The dock belonged to Margaret personally.
The foundation had paid to repair permanent private property.
Margaret called it:
“event safety preparation.”
Maybe partly legitimate.
But not automatically.
Then Emily saw the vendor name.
Carter Estate Services.
Owned by Margaret’s nephew, Colin.
Related-party.
