Chapter 8 - THE COLLAR

Buddy’s collar mattered in a different way.
It had a small GPS tracker.
Emily had bought it because Buddy once escaped through a broken fence.
The tracker log showed:
3:14 p.m. — backyard.
3:16 — lakeside.
3:17 — stationary in water.
3:18 — moving rapidly toward shore.
It did not prove who threw him.
But it confirmed he was in the lake while Margaret claimed he had merely “gotten wet near the dock.”
Then another guest produced a short video.
Margaret holding the bag.
Buddy’s collar tag visible near the opening.
Then the throw.
Clear enough.
No gore.
No injury.
Just unmistakable intent.
Margaret’s public statement collapsed.
Foundation counsel withdrew it.
The board issued:
“Chair’s personal conduct does not reflect the foundation’s mission.”
Margaret called Emily screaming.
“You humiliated me.”
Emily looked at Buddy.
May you like
“No.”
“You did that yourself.”
