Chapter 6 - COLIN'S COMPANY

Carter Estate Services billed the foundation:
$312,000 over three years.
Services:
event setup,
property maintenance,
transportation,
security coordination,
seasonal landscaping.
Not all at Margaret’s house.
Some at:
shelter properties,
fundraising venues,
warehouse sites.
Real work.
But rates were high.
Independent comparison showed:
approximately $74,000 above market across reviewed jobs.
Then invoices duplicated certain transportation charges already billed by outside vendors.
Estimated duplicate amount:
$28,400.
Colin said:
“Administrative mistake.”
Possible.
Then emails.
MARGARET:
Keep Colin on the lake work. Family should benefit from family events.
FOUNDATION CFO:
We need conflict documentation.
MARGARET:
Handle it internally.
There.
Not a direct order to overcharge.

But a clear attitude.
The rules were something staff should “handle” around her decisions.
