Chapter 11 - MELISSA FILES

The custody petition arrived on a Thursday.
Melissa requested increased parenting time.
Primary school-week residence for Alyssa.
A modified schedule for Jason based on his stated preference.
She alleged emotional pressure in Daniel’s household, “financially contingent privileges,” and a stepmother whose control had recently “escalated into punitive withdrawal of communications and technology.”
There it was.
The Wi-Fi.
The phone.
The exact moment Melissa had predicted.
Rachel stared at the petition.
“She built this.”
Simone nodded.
“Partly.”
Rachel looked at her.
“Partly?”
“You still shut off devices in anger.”
Rachel hated that.
Because it was true.
Simone continued.
“Core phone communication was restored quickly. The factual context matters. But court will look at behavior, not just provocation.”
Daniel looked sick.
“What about the plane?”
“Included?”
“No.”
Melissa’s filing described “a sibling conflict involving a toy.”
Rachel laughed without humor.
“Of course.”
Jason submitted a declaration.
He preferred Melissa’s home.
Said Rachel made him feel like a guest.
Said he felt guilty using things she paid for.
Said Daniel sided with Rachel.
Some of that was true.
Alyssa refused to sign a declaration.
That caused war at Melissa’s house.
Rachel learned later.
Melissa cried.
Asked Alyssa if she was “choosing Rachel.”
Alyssa called Daniel from a school bathroom.
“Dad, I can’t do this.”
Daniel went pale.
“Do what?”
“Pick.”
That call became more important than any legal filing.
Daniel told her:
“You do not have to choose.”
Then documented it.
No attack on Melissa.
No speech about betrayal.
Just permission.
The family court appointed a custody evaluator.
Now everyone would be interviewed.
Rachel felt dread.
Naomi told her:
“Stop trying to look good.”
“What?”
“Tell the truth. Including your mistakes.”
That became the strategy.
No saint.
No monster.
Facts.

Patterns.
