Chapter 15 - JASON COMES HOME

Jason did not return to Rachel’s house immediately.

He stayed mostly with Melissa for six weeks.

Then one Friday, he asked Daniel:

“Can I come over?”

Daniel said yes.

Rachel did not prepare a welcome dinner.

Did not overperform.

That was important.

Jason entered with one backpack.

Ethan saw him from the hallway and froze.

Jason stopped too.

Silence.

Then:

“Hey.”

Ethan said nothing.

Jason swallowed.

“I’m not going near your room.”

That was the right first sentence.

Later, Jason sat with Rachel in the kitchen.

He looked older than sixteen suddenly.

“I’m sorry.”

Rachel did not rescue him from the discomfort.

“For what?”

“The plane.”

“Anything else?”

He looked away.

“Saying you weren’t my real mom.”

Rachel nodded.

“That part can be true.”

Jason looked confused.

“I’m not your biological mother.”

“But I meant—”

“I know what you meant.”

He swallowed.

“I wanted it to hurt.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

Rachel believed him more because he named intent.

Then Jason asked:

“Are you going to turn my stuff back on?”

Rachel almost laughed.

“Some of it already is.”

“My game subscription?”

“No.”

He stared.

“Why?”

“Because apology is not a vending machine.”

To her surprise, he smiled.

Barely.

“Fair.”

They discussed earning back privileges through behavior, not affection.

No forced hugs.

No calling her Mom.

No gratitude debt.

Just rules.

Respect.

Contribution.

Jason asked:

“Do you still want me here?”

Rachel looked at him.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

The question hurt.

“Because you are part of my family.”

He blinked.

“Even if I don’t call you Mom?”

“Yes.”

“Even after what I did?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you say you weren’t my ATM?”

Rachel thought.

“Because family is not a subscription plan.”

Jason laughed once.

May you like

Then cried.

Rachel did not hug him until he leaned toward her first.
