Chapter 5 - MELISSA ANSWERS

Melissa Miller replied to Daniel’s message six hours later.

The message was almost perfect.

I’m concerned Rachel is punishing the children financially for expressing loyalty to their biological mother. I will not support coercive step-parenting.

Rachel read it once.

Then handed the tablet back.

“She’s good.”

Daniel looked sick.

“Don’t sound impressed.”

“I am impressed.”

“Why?”

“Because she removed the plane entirely.”

Daniel looked at the message again.

No mention of Jason destroying Ethan’s property.

No mention of the group chat.

No mention of “push until she cracks.”

Just financial punishment and biological loyalty.

Daniel wrote back:

Jason intentionally destroyed Ethan’s handmade plane and told him he was not family. You instructed the children that if they pushed Rachel, she would crack. We have the messages. We are arranging family therapy.

Melissa answered:

You have no right to access private communications between me and my children.

Daniel stared.

Rachel said:

“Don’t argue.”

He looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because now she knows we have evidence.”

“What evidence?”

“The messages.”

“No, I mean what do you think she’s afraid of?”

Rachel’s instincts, honed by years managing internal investigations at work, had already gone there.

“If this were only about her hating me, she’d call you and scream.”

Daniel nodded.

“She’s staying in writing.”

“Exactly.”

“Because?”

“She expected the messages might be seen someday.”

Daniel went pale.

Rachel scrolled back.

The language really was careful.

Never:

Break things.

Threaten Ethan.

Lie to Daniel.

Instead:

Push back.

Don’t let her replace me.

Document control.

Make him see.

Melissa was building a record.

Rachel said:

“She isn’t just trying to turn them against me.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“She’s building a custody story.”

The possibility hit hard.

Jason was sixteen.

Alyssa fourteen.

Old enough for their preferences to matter heavily in any custody modification.

If both children claimed Rachel was controlling, financially coercive, and Daniel always sided with her, Melissa could seek more parenting time.

Maybe reduced support obligations.

Maybe something else.

Daniel whispered:

“She asked me two months ago if I’d agree to change the schedule.”

Rachel looked at him.

“You didn’t tell me.”

“I thought it was routine.”

Again.

Hidden mess.

Rachel stood.

“We need a lawyer.”

Daniel nodded.

May you like

Not to attack Melissa.

To understand what game had already started.
