Chapter 2 - THE MESSAGE THAT SAID MAKE HER SHOW WHO SHE IS

Rachel did not read the messages aloud.

Not immediately.

Ethan was still in the room.

That mattered.

She closed the tablet and turned toward him.

“Come with me.”

He looked up through tears.

“My plane.”

“We’re taking it.”

He gathered the pieces into his shirt.

Rachel brought him upstairs.

Zipped the broken parts into a fabric storage bag.

Washed the tiny splinter from his palm.

Then sat beside him.

“Did Jason do anything else before today?”

Ethan stared at his knees.

“That’s not a no.”

“He says stuff.”

“What stuff?”

Ethan hesitated.

“That you care about him more because you pay for things.”

Rachel’s heart tightened.

“What else?”

“That when Dad leaves, they get the real house back.”

“Who is they?”

“Jason and Alyssa.”

Rachel closed her eyes.

“Did he say who told him that?”

Ethan shook his head.

Then:

“He said his mom knows what you’re really like.”

There it was.

Rachel did not ask more.

She kissed Ethan’s hair.

“None of this is your fault.”

He looked at the bag.

“Can we fix it?”

Rachel swallowed.

“We can try.”

“But it won’t be the same.”

“No.”

He began crying again.

Rachel held him.

Downstairs, Daniel waited.

Jason stood near the fireplace with arms folded.

Alyssa cried silently on the couch.

Rachel placed the tablet on the dining table.

“Read it.”

Daniel opened the thread.

Jason tried:

“Dad—”

“Don’t.”

The word came out colder than Rachel had ever heard from him.

The messages were from Melissa to both children.

Not overtly monstrous.

That was what made them effective.

They were careful.

Plausable.

Parental enough to hide the blade.

Remember, Rachel is not your mother.

Do not let her replace me.

If she starts controlling your money or your devices, take screenshots.

She will eventually show Daniel who she really is.

Jason replied three weeks earlier:

She acts like she owns everything.

Melissa:

Because financially she thinks she does.

Alyssa:

She paid for my school trip.

Melissa:

That’s how people buy loyalty.

Rachel stared.

Four years of support translated into manipulation.

Then the message that made Daniel sit down.

Melissa:

If you push back hard enough, she will crack. Then your father will finally see what I’ve been warning him about.

Jason:

How hard?

Melissa:

Do not hurt anyone. Just stop playing happy family.

Alyssa:

What if Ethan cries?

Melissa:

He’ll survive. Rachel always makes everything about him anyway.

Daniel covered his mouth.

Rachel did not look at him.

Not yet.

Jason said:

“She never told me to break the plane.”

Rachel turned.

“You chose that yourself?”

He looked away.

“Yes.”

That was somehow worse.

Because Melissa had seeded contempt.

Jason had supplied imagination.

Daniel took the tablet.

“How long has this been going on?”

Alyssa whispered:

“Months.”

Jason snapped:

“Don’t.”

Daniel stood.

“How long?”

Alyssa started crying.

“Since Christmas.”

Six months.

Rachel thought back.

Christmas morning.

Melissa suddenly asking for more FaceTime.

Jason becoming colder after family trips.

Alyssa refusing to let Rachel braid her hair before a school dance after asking for years.

Small things.

She had called them adolescence.

Daniel stared at his children.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Jason laughed bitterly.

“Because you always pick her.”

Rachel felt the room tilt.

Daniel recoiled.

“What?”

“You moved us into her house.”

“This is our house.”

“No. It’s hers.”

Technically true.

Rachel bought the house before marrying Daniel.

She had never made that distinction inside the family.

Apparently everyone else had.

Jason continued.

“She pays for everything. She makes the rules. She decides where we go.”

Rachel said quietly:

“Your father decides too.”

Jason looked at her.

“No, he doesn’t.”

Daniel’s face changed.

That sentence went deeper than the others.

Rachel suddenly understood this was not simply about Melissa poisoning two teenagers against a stepmother.

May you like

The family had built its own weak places.

Melissa just learned where they were.
