Chapter 8 - MELISSA’S HOUSE

Jason stayed with Melissa.

Then asked to extend.

Alyssa wanted to go too.

Daniel agreed to one additional week while therapy was scheduled.

The house became quieter.

Ethan relaxed almost immediately.

Rachel noticed.

That hurt.

Alyssa noticed too.

Before leaving, she stood in Rachel’s doorway.

“Are you happy we’re going?”

Rachel looked at her.

“No.”

“You seem happy.”

“I’m relieved Ethan feels safe.”

Alyssa flinched.

“So we make him unsafe.”

“Jason did.”

“And me?”

Rachel paused.

“You laughed.”

Alyssa looked down.

“I didn’t break it.”

“No.”

“I told him after that I was sorry.”

Rachel hadn’t known.

“When?”

“That night.”

“Did he accept?”

“He said okay.”

Rachel nodded.

“That matters.”

Alyssa started crying.

“I don’t know what I’m supposed to do.”

“What do you mean?”

“If I like you, Mom gets sad.”

Rachel felt something break softly.

There it was.

Loyalty conflict.

Not teenage wickedness.

A child learning that affection was betrayal.

Rachel sat beside her.

“You are allowed to love your mother.”

Alyssa cried harder.

“And you?”

“You are allowed to feel however you feel about me.”

“What if I love you too?”

Rachel’s eyes filled.

“Then that’s allowed too.”

Alyssa leaned into her.

Rachel held her.

Not as victory over Melissa.

As freedom from the competition Melissa had built.

Alyssa whispered:

“Mom says stepmoms always try to erase real moms.”

“I’m not trying to erase her.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Alyssa nodded against her shoulder.

That was the first real crack in Melissa’s narrative.

Not evidence.

Relationship.

And unlike money, relationship could not be restored with one click.
