Chapter 16 - MELISSA WITHOUT AN ENEMY
The court order removed one of Melissa’s favorite tools:
Rachel as threat.
She could no longer use communication with the children to build a case unchecked.
Therapists saw patterns.
Daniel stopped hiding facts.
Alyssa stopped performing loyalty.
Jason began naming grief.
Rachel stopped proving love with spending.
Without an enemy, Melissa had to face herself.
She did not transform overnight.
At first, she became more bitter.
Then isolated.
Jason began challenging her.
“Rachel didn’t steal Dad.”
Melissa would freeze.
Alyssa said:
“I’m allowed to love both of you.”
That hurt more.
Melissa eventually agreed to individual therapy after Jason refused to continue being her confidant about Daniel.
Her first apology to Rachel came through the parenting app.
It was terrible.
I’m sorry if some messages were interpreted as pressure.
Rachel showed Daniel.
He groaned.
“She learned nothing.”
Rachel said:
“Maybe first drafts are ugly.”
Three months later, another message came.
I told the kids things about you that I believed were protective. Some were unfair and some were untrue. I put them in the middle. I am working on that.
Better.
Rachel replied only:
Thank you for acknowledging it.
No friendship.
No performance.
No invitation.
Boundaries.
Melissa was still the kids’ mother.
