Chapter 14 - THE SECOND BIRTHDAY

One year after the pool-party incident, Ariel turned four.

Rachel almost avoided having a party.

Then decided Clara did not get to own birthdays.

They used the same backyard.

Same pool.

New balloons.

Smaller guest list.

Glen attended for ninety minutes under the parenting plan.

Clara did not.

He arrived carrying one wrapped gift.

Ariel ran to him.

“Daddy!”

Rachel watched her own body tense.

Then release.

Glen hugged Ariel.

No whispered secrets.

No adult tension disguised as celebration.

Good.

Then Ariel pointed toward the pool house.

“Remember blue square?”

Rachel and Glen froze.

Ariel laughed.

“You got scared.”

Glen looked at Rachel.

Then crouched.

“Yes.”

Ariel asked:

“Why?”

Glen glanced at Rachel for permission.

She nodded.

He chose carefully.

“Because Daddy was hiding something from Mommy, and you saw a clue.”

Ariel frowned.

“Was I bad?”

“No.”

Glen’s voice broke slightly.

“You were not bad.”

Then:

“Clara was wrong to hit you.”

Ariel nodded solemnly.

“Mommy said.”

Glen smiled sadly.

“Mommy was right.”

Then Ariel ran away toward the cake.

Rachel looked at him.

“That mattered.”

“I know.”

He paused.

“I should have said it a year ago.”

“Yes.”

Then he told Rachel the Bramble Ridge house had sold.

She did not ask price.

Did not ask whether Clara lost money.

Did not ask where she moved.

He noticed.

“You don’t care?”

Rachel thought.

“No.”

May you like

And meant it.

That was freedom.
