Glen claimed the blueprint was for a “joint investment.”
Rachel stared at him.
“You and Clara invest together?”
“She found the property.”
“What property?”
“A small place outside the city.”
“Address?”
He hesitated.
“Rachel—”
“Address.”
He finally gave it.
1428 Bramble Ridge Road.
Rachel searched public property records that night.
Owner:
Bennett Ridge Holdings LLC.
Registered agent:
Clara Bennett.
Purchase date:
four months earlier.
Price:
$612,000.
Cash down payment:
$180,000.
Mortgage:
$432,000.
Rachel checked household accounts.
No obvious $180,000 withdrawal.
Then she checked Glen’s business account.
Nothing.
Clara had money from her marriage to Rachel’s late father, but not much liquid cash.
Where did the down payment come from?
Rachel called Daniel Cho, the attorney who handled part of her father’s estate.
He listened quietly.
Then asked:
“Do you have any reason to think trust or estate funds were used?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then don’t assume.”
That was Daniel’s strength.
He never let anger outrun proof.
They began with title records.
The LLC had two internal members listed in a private filing obtained through counsel.
Clara Bennett:
51%.
Glen Carter:
49%.
Rachel stared.
Not just helping.
Not just advising.
Owner.
Then a lender document surfaced.
Occupancy intent:
Primary residence after renovation.
Rachel’s hands went cold.
Primary residence.
For whom?
The loan officer’s notes said:
Borrowers anticipate consolidation of households after personal transition period.
Personal transition.
Rachel looked at Daniel.
“What does that mean?”
“It means exactly what they wanted the lender to think without stating more.”
Then he showed her one email.
Glen to lender:
Need discretion until family timing is right.
The next line made Rachel’s stomach turn.
Children adaptable if transition handled gradually.
Children.
Plural?
Ariel was one child.
Clara had none living at home.
Rachel stared.
“Who else?”
Daniel said:
“We don’t know yet.”
Then he found the contractor’s intake sheet.
Future bedroom assignments:
PRIMARY – G/C.
CHILD 1 – A.
CHILD 2 – TBD.
Rachel stopped breathing.
