Chapter 8 - CLARA'S MOTIVE
Rachel expected Clara’s motive to be romance.
It was not enough.
Clara had resented Rachel for years.
Not openly.
Elegantly.
Rachel was her late husband’s only daughter.
Clara married him when Rachel was twenty-four.
The relationship never became maternal.
But Clara enjoyed the role:
hostess,
stepmother,
family gatekeeper.
When Rachel’s father died, most of his estate went according to long-standing plans:
some to Clara,
some to Rachel,
protected assets for Ariel.
Clara received enough to live comfortably.
Not enough to control the family.
That mattered.
Glen, meanwhile, felt increasingly sidelined by Rachel’s separate assets.
He complained to Clara privately.
Two resentments met.
Clara:
Rachel will always be someone’s protected daughter.
Glen:
She never has to risk anything.
Clara:
Then stop structuring your life around her comfort.
At first their alliance was emotional.
Then strategic.
They discussed separation.
Property.
A future household.
Then the affair began.
Glen said Clara made him feel understood.
Clara said Glen made her feel chosen over Rachel.
That was the psychological engine.
Not wild passion.
Competition.
Then Clara said something during deposition that Rachel would never forget.
“I was tired of Rachel always being the center of what everyone protected.”
Daniel asked:
“So you built a household where she would be absent?”
Clara answered:
“We built a household where adults could make decisions.”
Rachel almost laughed when she read it.
As if motherhood made her childish.
As if consent were immaturity.
Then Daniel uncovered a planning email.
Clara:
Ariel will adjust faster if she experiences both homes before Rachel frames Bramble Ridge as betrayal.
Glen:
Agreed.
They intended to introduce Ariel to the secret house before telling Rachel why it existed.
Again:
use the child’s presence to make the future feel inevitable.
Rachel felt rage rise.
Then settle.
She knew exactly what she would fight now.
Not the house.
