Chapter 10 - WHY TESSA RAISED THEM

Tessa asked Amber the question she had avoided.
“Why me?”
Amber frowned.
“What?”
“Why did you make me raise them?”
“I didn’t make you.”
“Stop saying that.”
Amber looked away.
Tessa continued.
“You had Mark. You had Daniel secretly. You had Mom sometimes. Why was I always the one you called?”
Amber said:
“Because you never left.”
That answer hurt more than blame.
Tessa was reliable.
Amber knew it.
When Amber was exhausted, Tessa came.
When a child was sick, Tessa came.
When Mark traveled, Tessa came.
When Daniel felt guilty, he volunteered too.
Tessa’s love became infrastructure around everyone else’s deceit.
Amber admitted she sometimes sent the children over specifically because Daniel would be there.
“He asked about them.”
Tessa stared.
“You gave him access through me.”
“Yes.”
“Without telling me.”
“Yes.”
That turned childcare into another layer of betrayal.
Daniel had spent time with his biological children inside Tessa’s home while she believed he was simply being a generous uncle.
Then Amber said:
“You loved them too.”
Tessa snapped:
“Don’t use that to justify it.”
Amber went quiet.
Love was exactly why exploitation worked.
If Tessa did not care, she could have walked away years earlier.
Then Tessa saw old family photographs.
Daniel always stood close to the children.
Mark usually held one.
Tessa often held another.
Amber was frequently outside the frame.
That became symbolic, but Grace warned:
“Photographs are not evidence of parenting quality by themselves.”
Fine.
But Tessa did not need court proof of her exhaustion.
She had lived it.
Then Sarah asked her:
“What would you have done if you knew they were Daniel’s?”
Tessa could not answer.
Stay?
Leave?
Love the children?
Hate Amber?

The stolen thing was not only marriage fidelity.
It was informed choice.
