Chapter 9 - MARK'S FATHERHOOD
Mark filed for separation.
Then came the question of the children.
He was angry enough to say:
“They’re not mine.”
Grace warned him.
“Do not say that in front of them.”
He corrected himself.
“My biology is not theirs.”
Better.
He asked for temporary parenting orders.
Amber objected.
“You’re not their father.”
Mark stared at her.
“You let me be their father for nine years.”
Amber’s face changed.
That was true.
She had not merely deceived Mark sexually.
She let him build an identity around false information.
But the children’s relationship with him was real.
The court treated stability seriously.
No instant removal.
No dramatic handoff to Daniel.
Daniel himself said:
“I’m not trying to replace Mark.”
Tessa looked at him.
“That’s the first correct thing you’ve said.”
Daniel accepted it.
Then one more paternity result returned through a proper legal process.
Grace, age five.
Daniel:
biological father.
Three confirmed.
Eli’s test remained pending.
Tessa felt numb.
Daniel asked:
“Do you want me there when Eli’s comes back?”
“No.”
When the result arrived:
Daniel was also Eli’s biological father.
All four.
Exactly as Amber said.
Mark cried alone in his car.
Tessa knew because Sarah saw him in the courthouse lot.
No celebration from Daniel.
No victory.
Four biological connections did not grant moral entitlement.
Then Amber said something during mediation that shocked everyone.
“I didn’t keep them from Daniel.”
Tessa stared.
“You kept the truth from him.”
“He chose not to ask.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Amber continued:
“Every time I hinted, he told me to stop.”
Daniel whispered:
“That’s true.”
Tessa felt rage move again.
Not toward Amber alone.
Daniel had constructed ignorance as a defense.
Then Grace asked Amber:
“Why keep Mark as father?”
Amber answered:
“Because he was good at it.”
