Chapter 3 - THE TIMELINES

Amber tried to retreat.
“I mean—I know the timing.”
Mark laughed without humor.
“Finally.”
Tessa refused to rely on memory.
Grace Bennett, her attorney, told her:
“Build timelines before conclusions.”
Birth dates.
Conception windows.
Travel.
Hotels.
Work calendars.
Old photographs.
Amber had been married to Mark for eleven years.
Tessa married Daniel eight years ago.
That mattered.
Lily was nine.
If Daniel could be Lily’s father, the affair began before Tessa married him.
Tessa asked:
“Were you sleeping with Amber while we were dating?”
Daniel said:
“Yes.”
The word landed differently than infidelity after marriage.
Still betrayal.
Still deception.
Then Noah’s timeline.
Seven years old.
Conception window overlapped a week Mark attended a trade conference in Phoenix.
Daniel told Tessa that same week he was helping a friend renovate a rental property.
Which friend?
He could not remember.
Grace pulled financial records through divorce discovery.
Hotel charge.
Two nights.
Riverside Hotel.
Thirty minutes from Amber’s home.
Daniel said:
“I met her.”
Tessa stared.
“So Noah could be yours.”
“Yes.”
Grace said:
“Could.”
Not proof.
Grace repeated that word often.
Grace’s job was not to let rage become fiction.
Grace’s first rule:
“Separate what Daniel admits from what biology proves.”
Grace’s second:
“Do not test children casually because adults want emotional certainty.”
Parentage testing had legal and psychological consequences.
Mark had already tested through counsel because he needed to establish his own status.
Daniel’s involvement required another process.
Then Grace found something stranger.
Grace’s conception window—the child Grace, not the attorney—overlapped a family vacation.
Tessa and Daniel had been together the entire week.
Or so Tessa thought.
A photo album showed Daniel missing from one afternoon.
He told everyone he had gone fishing.
Amber was also missing.
She said she had a migraine.
Tessa stared at the timestamps.
Two absences.
Same three-hour window.
Then Grace found a shared-photo metadata entry.
One photograph uploaded from Amber’s phone during that window.
Location:
a roadside motel twelve miles away.
Tessa’s stomach turned.
Then she saw the filename.
May you like
DC_1432.
Daniel Carter’s initials.
