Chapter 8 - THE CHILDREN HAD HEARD MORE

Children hear fragments.
Not cases.
Not timelines.
Fragments.
Lily remembered arguments.
“You always compare me to Daniel.”
“You know why I call him.”
“Stop bringing Tessa into this.”
She never understood them.
Now adults did.
Noah remembered once waking during a sleepover at Tessa’s and seeing Amber in the kitchen with Daniel after midnight.
He thought she came to pick him up.
She did not.
Grace insisted no one turn the children into witnesses unless professionals deemed it necessary.
Adult records were enough for much of the story.
Hotel receipts.
Phone logs.
Messages.
Paternity results.
Admissions.
The kids did not need to solve their own family.
Then Tessa received copies of recovered messages between Amber and Daniel.
Most were ugly but unsurprising.
Meet me.
Delete this.
Tessa’s working late.
Mark leaves Thursday.
Then one message stopped her.
Amber:
Tessa will take the kids if I tell her I’m overwhelmed.
Daniel:
Don’t use her like that.
Amber:
You do too.
Daniel:
That’s different.
Amber:
How?
No response.
Tessa read it again.
Daniel had objected.
Then failed to stop participating.
Amber called out the hypocrisy directly.
Another message:
Daniel:
She thinks I’m helping because I love her.
Amber:
Don’t you?
Daniel:
Yes.
Amber:
Then we’re both horrible.
Tessa put the phone down.
There was no mastermind.
No one person manipulating everyone else.
Two adults knew what they were doing was wrong.
They kept doing it.
Then another old thread appeared after Eli’s birth.
Amber:
He looks like you.
Daniel:
Stop.
Amber:
You know he does.
Daniel:
I don’t want to know.
That sentence became the emotional core.
May you like
Daniel had not been denied the truth.
He had avoided it.
