Chapter 14 - LOVE AS A TRAP

Daniel had written it.
No ambiguity.
She won’t if she loves her enough by then.
Tessa confronted him one final time.
“You knew I was bonding with Lily.”
“Yes.”
“You thought loving her would keep me from leaving you.”
Daniel cried.
“I was scared.”
“No.”
Tessa shook her head.
“You were strategic.”
He flinched.
That word fit.
Not mastermind.
Not grand conspiracy.
A selfish calculation.
He believed time and attachment would make truth survivable.
For him.
Not for Tessa.
Daniel said:
“I loved you.”
“I know.”
That confused him.
Tessa continued:
“That’s what makes it worse.”
Love did not cancel manipulation.
Then Amber admitted she knew about the message.
She had replied:
She’ll never walk away from the kids.
Tessa looked at both of them during mediation.
“You built your safety around my conscience.”
Silence.
That was the deepest betrayal.
They counted on her compassion.
Her reliability.
Her attachment.
The things she liked best about herself became tools against her.
Tessa refused to let that turn her cold.
She would not stop loving the children to prove she was free.
She would change the terms.
Chosen contact.
Clear boundaries.
No emergency parenting unless true emergency.
No secrecy.
No using children to access Daniel.
No using Tessa to avoid Amber’s responsibilities.
The family therapists supported it.
Then came the fifth baby.
Ryan’s paternity was confirmed after birth.
He established legal responsibility and gradually became involved.
Amber could no longer assume Tessa would absorb the child.
For the first time, Amber had to build a childcare plan before crisis.
Then Amber asked Tessa:
“Do you hate me?”
Tessa answered:
“Yes, sometimes.”
Amber looked stunned.
Tessa continued:
“And I still hope you become a better mother.”
Both could be true.
Then Amber asked:
“Will you ever forgive me?”
Tessa looked toward the room where Lily, Noah, Grace, and Eli were playing.
May you like
“I don’t know.”
For once, uncertainty was not something Amber could force her to fix.
