Chapter 1 - THE MOTHER WHO LET GO

Laura Carter had rehearsed leaving.

Not in the mirror.

Not with words.

In routes.

West entrance.

Luxury atrium.

Escalator.

North arcade.

Parking structure.

Ride-share pickup.

She had studied the mall map twice before bringing Emma.

That was what made it deliberate.

Emma was two.

Pink dress.

Tiny white shoes.

Warm hand wrapped around Laura’s finger.

“Mommy?”

“I’m here.”

For six minutes.

Then Laura’s phone vibrated.

One message.

MOVE NOW.

She stopped beside a fountain.

Looked down at Emma.

The little girl smiled.

Then Laura pulled her hand away.

Hard.

Emma blinked.

Laura turned.

Walked.

Emma followed.

“Mommy?”

Laura moved faster.

Emma’s steps became frantic.

“MOMMY! WAIT!”

Laura looked back once.

Only once.

Emma’s face was collapsing.

Laura’s own face did too.

For half a second.

Then she turned away.

Disappeared into the crowd.

Emma ran.

Tiny unstable steps.

Crying so hard she could barely breathe.

She grabbed strangers’ sleeves.

“Mommy! Mommy!”

Some stopped.

Some didn’t understand.

Some thought another parent was close.

Then Emma rounded a corner.

Hit something solid.

A man.

Black tailored suit.

Expensive watch.

Two bodyguards behind him.

Victor Kane looked down.

Emma fell backward.

The guards moved forward.

Emma screamed harder.

“MOMMY!”

Then crawled to Victor.

Wrapped both arms around his leg.

“Mommy gone…”

One bodyguard whispered:

“Boss…”

Victor stared at the child.

Expressionless.

Then bent down.

Lifted her into one arm.

Emma clung to his neck instantly.

Victor looked into her wet face.

“An ugly little devil.”

The bodyguards exchanged a disturbed glance.

Victor slowly turned toward them.

“Fish food…”

Pause.

“…or the dogs?”

One guard’s jaw tightened.

Victor gave a faint smile.

Then leaned closer to Emma and whispered so quietly only she heard:

“Don’t worry.”

His eyes moved toward the crowd.

Tracking.

Searching.

May you like

Because he had already seen Laura.

And Laura had seen him.
