Chapter 10 - DANIEL CHANGES SIDES AGAIN
Daniel Price was not loyal.
To Laura.
To Voss.
To anyone.
He was loyal to survival.
At Blue Harbor, Voss ordered him to call Laura’s emergency contact.
No father.
No family nearby.
Then:
“Call the daycare. Ask who picked Emma up.”
Daniel froze.
“Police will trace it.”
Voss smiled.
“Good.”
He wanted police moving toward daycare while Laura moved elsewhere.
Daniel dialed.
Then stopped.
For the first time, he imagined Emma actually disappearing.
Not as leverage.
As a child.
Laura watched him.
“You did this.”
Daniel whispered:
“I know.”
Then he did something useful.
He dialed 911.
Left the phone connected in his pocket.
Voss noticed too late.
He grabbed Daniel’s coat.
Daniel ran.
Alarms?
No.
Chaos.
Laura kicked over a metal chair.
Voss turned.
Daniel got outside.
Police dispatch heard:
voices,
warehouse machinery,
train horn.
Location narrowed.
Not heroism.
