Chapter 7 - LAURA IN THE WAREHOUSE

Laura woke in a chair.
Hands zip-tied.
No graphic injury.
Daniel sat across from her.
Free.
Laura stared.
“You.”
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Laura—”
“You sold me.”
He said:
“I thought Voss would scare you.”
She laughed bitterly.
“Scare me?”
Daniel looked away.
Then Elliot Voss entered.
Fifty.
Gray suit.
Polite voice.
No shouting.
Worse.
“Where’s the card?”
Laura said nothing.
Voss smiled.
“With the child?”
Laura’s face betrayed her.
He saw it.
Then Daniel stood.
“You said you wouldn’t touch Emma.”
Voss turned.
“I said I wouldn’t need to.”
Then phone rang.
Voss answered.
Listened.
His smile disappeared.
Victor Kane had the child.
Worse:
police had the card.
Voss stared at Laura.
“You chose the one man who could ruin this.”
Laura whispered:
“I didn’t choose him.”
That was true.
May you like
Emma did.
By accident.
