Chapter 1 - THE MAN WHO WALKED BACK IN

For sixty-three days, Grant Whitmore was dead enough for everyone to behave differently.
Not legally dead.
Not yet.
Presumed dead.
His charter plane had gone down during a storm over northern Maine.
Two bodies were recovered.
Grant was not one of them.
Search crews found wreckage, fuel, clothing, blood, and nothing that proved he walked away.
After three weeks, the official search ended.
After six, the family stopped expecting phone calls.
Julia Whitmore did not cry in public anymore.
She organized.
At thirty-five, she had been Grant’s wife for four years.
Second wife.
Stepmother to:
Ethan, thirteen.
Ben, five.
Their biological mother, Claire Whitmore, had died years earlier after illness.
Molly Hayes had been their nanny since Ben was a baby.
The boys trusted her.
Grant trusted her.
Julia tolerated her.
Until Grant disappeared.
Then Molly was fired.
No explanation Ben understood.
No goodbye Ethan accepted.
That night, during a storm, dinner became a fight.
Ben pushed away his plate.
“I want Molly.”
Julia said:
“She’s gone.”
“Bring her back.”
“Eat.”
“No!”
Julia’s palm cracked across his face.
Ben reeled sideways.
“WATCH YOUR MOUTH!”
Ethan half rose from his chair.
Ben glared.
“Where’s Molly?! I want HER! Not YOU!”
Julia slapped him again.
“Try that again.”
Ethan charged.
“DON’T TOUCH HIM!”
The house security guard, Marcus Reed, caught Ethan from behind.
Ethan kicked and twisted.
“LET ME GO!”
Ben rushed behind his brother.
“I HATE YOU! I’LL TELL DAD!”
Julia stepped toward him.
“YOUR DAD IS DEAD!”
The room froze.
Then—
BANG.
The front door flew open.
Rain blew across marble.
A tall man stepped inside.
Soaked.
Unshaven.
Thinner.
Ben stared.
“Dad...?”
Julia turned.
Her face emptied.
Grant Whitmore walked into the dining room.
He saw:
Ben clutching his cheek.
Ethan restrained.
Julia standing over both boys.
He looked at Marcus.
Then Julia.
“What the hell is going on?”
Marcus released Ethan.
Nobody answered.
May you like
Grant had come home from the dead.
And within ten seconds, he knew the family he left behind had not survived him intact.
