Chapter 6 - THE DOCTOR'S NOTES
Dr. Alan Simmons had seen Ethan twice and Ben once.
He had not diagnosed either child with a major disorder.
His actual notes:
acute grief response,
anger,
attachment disruption,
sleep disturbance.
Reasonable after presumed death.
But Julia’s court summary described:
persistent behavioral dysregulation requiring structured supervision.
Dr. Simmons said:
“I did not write that sentence.”
Who did?
Julia’s estate consultant.
Then the therapist explained:
Ethan had punched a wall once.
Ben had thrown food.
Both boys screamed at Julia.
Real behavior.
Not fabricated.
But context mattered.
Their father was presumed dead.
Their nanny disappeared days later.
Their routines changed overnight.
Then Simmons said something more troubling.
“I recommended continuity with familiar caregivers where possible.”
Grant looked at Julia.
“You fired Molly after that?”
“She was undermining me.”
“Even after he recommended continuity?”
“Yes.”
