Chapter 9 - GRANT'S OWN FAILURE

Grant wanted to become the hero.

Rachel Sloan refused to let him.

“You disappeared through no fault of your own.”

Grant nodded.

“But before that?”

He frowned.

Rachel opened older family emails.

Molly had warned him:

Julia and Ethan were clashing.

Ben feared Julia’s punishments.

Julia wanted Molly removed.

Grant replied:

Work it out.

Another:

Please don’t put me in the middle.

Another:

I trust Julia to handle the house.

Grant stared.

Rachel said:

“You kept outsourcing conflict.”

He looked away.

“I traveled.”

“You avoided.”

True.

Grant wanted:

a new wife,

children who accepted her,

and no difficult transition.

So whenever tension appeared, he called it:

adjustment.

Then his plane crashed.

He left behind a structure already unstable.

Julia did not create every fracture.

She exploited some.

Deepened others.

Grant had helped build the conditions.

That mattered.
