Chapter 10 - THE MOTHER WHO CALLED CRUELTY "PROTECTION"

Diane held longer than Evan.
She refused cooperation.
She said:
Claire was unstable.
The family acted to protect assets.
The medication was prescribed.
The signing was voluntary.
The cane strike? A “tap” during an argument.
Richard’s kick? Accidental contact during movement.
Then video surfaced.
Not from the room.
From the house security hallway camera.
It showed Claire limping into the signing room normally with her brace.
Then later, after signing, Evan and Richard carrying her toward the bedroom because she could barely walk.
Diane following with the orange juice glass.
Timing hurt.
Then the glass itself.
A housekeeper had placed it in the dishwasher later.
No sample.
But pharmacy records and Diane’s texts supported the drug theory.
Then housekeeper testimony.
Diane told her:
“Mrs. Mercer took too much medication. If anyone asks, she was confused all evening.”
Before anyone asked.
Prepared narrative.
Then Claire confronted Diane in deposition.
Not personally aggressive.
Legally.
Maya asked:
“Why did you need Claire medicated?”
Diane answered:
“We didn’t.”
“Then why impersonate her to obtain clonazepam?”
“I did not impersonate her.”
“Why ask Caroline to?”
Diane’s jaw tightened.
“She was helping.”
“Helping whom?”
Silence.
Then:
“Your family.”
Diane’s entire moral system fit inside those two words.
The family.
Meaning:
Mercer family.
Company.
Legacy.
Project.
Evan.
Richard.
Claire had been family only when compliant.
Then Maya asked:
“Did you ever consider Claire’s refusal valid?”
Diane answered:
“She did not understand the consequences.”
There.
Control disguised as competence.
Then Claire finally spoke.
“What consequences?”
Diane looked at her.
“Everything Richard built.”
Claire nodded.
“So no.”
Diane frowned.
“No what?”
“You never considered my answer valid.”
May you like
Silence.
That was the truth.
