Chapter 6 - THE ACCOUNT EVAN SHOULD NOT HAVE TOUCHED

Claire had approximately $1.8 million in investments inherited from her father.
Not Mercer wealth.
Bennett money.
Evan knew.
The power of attorney granted broad authority.
Too broad.
He used it almost immediately.
Requested:
transfer of Claire’s brokerage assets into Mercer Family Protective Trust.
The brokerage compliance officer called Claire directly.
That saved them.
“Mrs. Mercer, we need verbal verification.”
Claire answered:
“No.”
The officer paused.
“Your agent submitted documents saying you may have cognitive impairment.”
Claire stared.
“Who?”
“Evan Mercer.”
Maya listened on speaker.
Claire said:
“I revoke all authority. Freeze everything.”
The account froze.
Then Claire and Maya filed emergency court papers.
Fraud.
Coercion.
Invalid power of attorney.
Property-transfer challenge.
Protective order regarding financial contact.
The court froze the Mercer Ridge transaction.
Evan’s family panicked.
Not publicly.
Internally.
Claire knew because Richard called.
Not Evan.
Richard.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.”
Claire recorded the call legally under local counsel’s guidance? To avoid jurisdiction issue, say Maya was on conference and advised. Keep simple.
Claire said:
“I know exactly what I’m doing.”
“The project financing closes in twelve days.”
There.
Deadline.
Claire smiled.
“Then you should’ve asked nicely.”
Richard exploded.
“This land is the only viable access!”
“No.”
Silence.
Claire had learned through an independent engineer that another route existed.
More expensive.
Not impossible.
The Mercer family lied when they said her land was essential.
They wanted it because it was cheaper.
Then Richard said:
“You are going to cost this family forty million dollars.”
Claire answered:
“You tried to drug me for a discount.”
He hung up.
Good.
Then Evan came to Maya’s office.
Alone.
No Diane.
No Richard.
He cried.
Claire almost laughed.
“I love you.”
She stared.
“You smiled while your mother hit my leg.”
His face broke.
“I was under pressure.”
“From whom?”
“My father.”
“Did he hold the knife? No knife. Did he hold the glass?”
Evan looked down.
Claire continued:
“Did he make you say good girl?”
Silence.
Then Evan shifted.
Strategy.
He said:
“You signed.”
Claire smiled.
“There you are.”
The tears stopped.
Evan leaned forward.
“You can fight it, but there’s video.”
“And audio.”
His face changed.
Tiny.
There.
He did not know.
Claire did not explain.
She simply said:
“Leave.”
He stood.
Then:
“If this goes public, my parents will bury you.”
May you like
Claire answered:
“They already tried.”
