Chapter 5 - THE MEDICAL FILE THEY BUILT BEFORE THE FALL

Maya obtained Claire’s medical records through emergency authorization.

The first surprise:

Dr. Marcus Bell had a chart for Claire.

Created four months earlier.

Claire had never seen him.

The chart contained:

reports of panic episodes,

memory lapses,

medication noncompliance,

family concern regarding “paranoid ideation,”

and a note that Claire exhibited “fixation on property control.”

Claire stared.

“This is fake.”

Maya nodded.

Then:

“Some of it is based on real things.”

That mattered.

Claire had experienced anxiety after her knee injury.

She had complained about insomnia.

She had once told Diane she felt like everyone was pressuring her about the land.

Those real statements became clinical pathology.

Then the chart listed “family historian: Diane Mercer.”

There.

Diane had been feeding information to Dr. Bell.

Had he knowingly falsified?

Not yet clear.

Maybe he believed Diane.

Then the clonazepam prescription.

Issued after a telehealth encounter.

Claire’s identity verified by:

driver’s license upload,

security questions,

video call.

Video call?

Maya requested metadata.

The patient joined from an IP address at the Mercer family office.

Claire had never been there that day.

Then a screenshot from the telehealth platform.

A blonde woman in poor lighting.

Not Claire.

Too blurry for obvious identification.

Possibly Diane?

Possibly someone else.

Then another record.

A competency note.

Not full incapacity.

But language:

Given reported confusion, patient may benefit from temporary family financial support and reduced decision burden.

Claire’s stomach turned.

They were building a paper runway toward incapacity.

If she resisted the property transfer, they could say:

confused.

medicated.

emotionally unstable.

already under medical concern.

If she accepted, they got the land.

Either way, Evan gained control.

Then Maya checked the transfer documents.

They had already been notarized electronically.

Timestamp:

9:14 p.m.

Claire signed around 9:07.

Fast.

The notary was remote.

Did the notary see coercion?

No.

Video feed showed only Claire at the table from shoulders up.

The cane strikes and intimidation happened off camera.

Evan had staged the signing area.

Then the notary asked:

“Are you signing voluntarily?”

Claire’s sedated voice answered:

“Yes.”

Claire closed her eyes.

She remembered.

Diane had squeezed her injured leg under the table when the question came.

The pen recording captured Claire gasping immediately afterward.

That might matter.

Then Maya said:

“We can move to freeze the transfer.”

Claire nodded.

“No.”

Maya stared.

“What?”

“Not yet.”

“You want them to file it?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I want to know how far they planned this.”

Maya looked at her for a long time.

Then smiled slightly.

“You’re not foggy.”

“No.”

“Good.”

So they waited forty-eight hours.

The Mercers filed the easement.

Then the power of attorney.

Then Evan used the power of attorney to request transfer of Claire’s investment account into a Mercer-controlled trust “for asset stabilization.”

There.

May you like

They were not after only the land.

They were testing whether they could take everything.
