Chapter 9 - THE HUSBAND WHO WANTED TO BE A VICTIM

Evan changed his defense.

He separated from his parents publicly.

Smart.

He claimed Richard and Diane orchestrated the medical scheme.

He admitted pressuring Claire but denied knowing the orange juice contained medication.

The recording hurt that.

Claire:

What did you put in that?

Evan:

Then stop fighting us.

His lawyer argued the response referred to property, not the drink.

Possible.

Then Evan claimed he believed Claire had already taken prescribed medication earlier.

He smiled at the signing because he thought the conflict was ending.

He called his “good girl” comment shameful but not criminal.

Claire hated how plausible selective explanations could sound.

Then prosecutors found messages.

Evan to Diane:

How much until she’s calm?

Diane:

Bell said low dose.

Evan:

Enough that she signs?

Diane:

Stop putting things in writing.

There.

Evan was not ignorant.

Then one more.

Evan:

What if she remembers?

Richard:

Then Bell’s chart becomes the story.

Claire stared.

Her husband had known everything.

Then Evan still tried emotional leverage.

He sent Claire a letter through counsel.

I was terrified of losing my family.

Claire almost laughed.

He meant Richard and Diane.

Not her.

Then:

Dad said if the project failed, hundreds of employees would lose bonuses and the senior-health division could collapse.

Not true.

Division would survive.

But Evan believed enough of it.

Then:

I told myself the land would still be yours in substance.

Claire read that twice.

In substance.

Same language people use when stealing control without admitting theft.

Then he wrote:

I thought once the project closed, we could repair us.

There.

He expected forgiveness after irreversible transfer.

Claire did not answer.

Instead, she filed for divorce.

Evan received the petition during a family strategy meeting.

According to his assistant, he threw a glass against the wall.

No one was hurt.

May you like

Still.

His temper finally became evidence against him too.
